Once Upon A Time - Purchasing A Bed and Breakfast Inn

It was 1999, my husband, Jerry, and I were making the move to Cape Cod, MA. Only thing about it--we didn't have any jobs. We were "in transition" from Jerry being a college football coach to my owning a small marketing company. We looked and looked at many inns. Some were too fussy, some to extreme, some the owner's quarters were in the basement or a converted garage, and, of course, some just way too expensive! It was important to us to have owner's quarters that would accommodate our family when they visited as well as feel like our home. We finally found one that "spoke to us" and felt like home. How exciting!. A 5 bedroom Greek Revival that had been floated over from Nantucket in the 1800's, now located in Chatham, MA. How to buy it without having employment and not alot of savings? Always a believer in creative financing, Jerry and I put together a small portfolio of our finances and our marketing abilities. Off we went to the bank. Viola! The gods were with us and approved our mortgage. May 26, 1999, we became the owners of the Nantucket House of Chatham Bed & Breakfast. That was only the beginning........

While we were looking for a B&B, we were tald that the divorce rate between husband and wife owners was very high. However, undaunted, we forged ahead! Jerry and I decided early on that we were split the jobs - Jerry would take care of the outside (landscaping, maintenance, computer advertising)and I would take care of the inside and be on duty 24/7 for guests. We both interacted with the guests and enjoyed many happy times sitting and chatting on our deck. Only problem was that it was difficult to have an argument with your spouse -- too many guests around!
